Mam's Law was in fact written by Wilhelm himself, and most of the slaves were aware of this. The slaves decide that Grace will be their new Mam, and that Manderlay will return to it's old ways. Grace orders Timothy to be flogged so she can escape, but she misses the rendez-vous with her father. She runs from Manderlay, chased by the slaves.

Grace Margaret Mulligan: There's nothing to be afraid of. We've taken all of the family's weapons.
Wilhelm: No. I'm afraid of what will happen now. I feel we ain't ready - for a completely new way of life. At Manderlay we slaves took supper at seven. When do people take supper when they're free? We don't know these things.
