Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story

Question: There's a guy in the bleachers with Gordon's wife during a championship game. He looks a lot like David Hasselhoff, but it's not. I was wondering if anyone knew who it was.

Answer: It's just a random guy in the bleachers, his hair is too light, and he is at least 20 years younger than David Hasselhoff.

Question: When Stiller is trying to flirt with the one lady at her house he says "Freakinare" or something. Whatever it is, what does it mean?

Answer: I think you may be mishearing "freaky naughty", which is pretty self-explanatory.

Question: In the commentary the director remarks about how he hated working with an actor and he/she won't work again. Does anyone know who this might be?

Answer: The whole commentary is a joke - they decided to parody other Hollywood commentaries instead of giving a serious one. The actor he was talking about was Ben Stiller, who turns up late for the commentary then leaves early. (The rest of the film is then the commentary for "There's Something About Mary"). So Ben Stiller is the actor, but it's not meant to be taken seriously.

Question: Can somebody please tell me all of the celebrity cameos throughout the film and where?

Answer: David Hasselhoff plays the coach of the German dodgeball team. William Shatner plays the host of the game. Chuck Norris plays the third judge. Lance Armstrong plays himself, and he was actually afflicted by cancer in the way he describes. I believe he says in the film he won the Tour de France 5 times since - that's now increased to six. A real dodgeball player, Tobias 'Sniper' McKinney played for the German Blitzkreig team.

Question: Could someone explain the joke behind ESPN 8 always being called 'The Ocho'?

Answer: There are many ESPN channels today. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Classic. ESPN2 is sometimes referred to as 'The Deuce' so that is where they most likely get 'The Ocho' from (8 in Spanish).

Question: What is the significance of the third judge being Chuck Norris? The thing is that everybody in the theater laughed when it showed it and he gave the thumbs up, I'm just wondering what it's all about.

Answer: There were many celebrity cameos throughout the film. It's just kind of strange that Chuck Norris would do this.

Chosen answer: "Deus Ex Machina" means "God out of the machine." It's from Greek plays, wherein a god would appear at the end of the story to solve a problem. Nowadays it basically means that a totally new plot element appears out of nowhere and solves everything. It's an easy (and cheap) way out.

Answer: I took it to mean the opening line someone uses when writing in to an advice column, like "Dear Abby." There was a 1998 book called "Dear Barbara: Answers to the Most-Asked Questions from Teenage Girls." Basically a joking way to say she hasn't quite grown up, or at least a kid at heart.

Question: Within the movie itself, they introduce the fictitious ADAA instructional film reel which shows a closeup of the lead based paint Timmy is using. You can see the name 'Lead Shield' on the paint can, but does anyone know what phrase is written above the name? (00:22:22)

Answer: "You get better yield with"

Thank you! I had a feeling that's what it read, but since I figured it would be more humorous, I had to ask. Thanks again, I can now sleep at night :).

I looked to see if it was a reference to an old slogan or something, but couldn't find anything, so it seems to just be something to rhyme.

Continuity mistake: During the final game when Justin is by himself, you can see Owen sitting on the bench without his track suit. When he throws the ball at White you can quickly see in the background Owen is standing behind Justin with his track suit on. Few shots later it cuts back to the bench and he is sitting down with the rest of the team with the uniform minus the track suit. (01:16:23 - 01:16:30)
