Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Question: When Hermione left divination why did she knock over the crystal ball?

Answer: It's an act of rebellion. Shows how much she thinks of Trelawny and the subject.

Answer: Hermione was always a bit arrogant about being the smartest student. She thought Divination was nonsense and deliberately gave a phony reading from the crystal ball to mock Trelawney and the subject. Trelawney knew she was faking it and made a rather rude assessment of Hermione's "ability." Hermione was insulted and and knocked the ball off the table in anger and disdain.

Question: Why did Hermione take her time turner with her to Hagrid's hut with Harry and Ron? She wouldn't need it.

Answer: Shes had it on her all year. And better to have it in case she needs it and to stop people finding it by accident if left in her dorm.

Answer: In the book, Hermione had to receive special permission from the Ministry of Magic to use the Time Turner and then had to abide by strict rules on how and when to use it and to keep its use a secret. As noted in the other answer, she would keep the Turner with her at all times to prevent it from being found and misused by other students (like the Weasley twins). For the purpose of the movie, Hermione is more prominently shown wearing it which is meant to be a clue to the audience about its existence and purpose.

Question: I heard there was a scene where Ron and Hermione hug but it was cut. Does anyone know at what point in the movie this hug would have taken place?

Answer: Other than when Hermione turns to Ron and puts her arms around his shoulders after the Trio thinks they've just witnessed Buckbeak's execution, there does not appear to be any other time when she hugs or embraces Ron. All of the Azkaban deleted scenes are online or were included with the DVD and none contain this.

My understanding is that the specific scene where she put her arm around Ron was actually supposed to be a real hug but Emma Watson didn't feel comfortable doing it so they changed it to only an arm.

It was more than just her arms, she had her face buried in his neck.

Question: What did Hermione call Scabbers in the Leaky Cauldron?

Answer: She called him a "smelly old shoe brush"

lionhead
2

I don't get that.

Well in that Scene Ron and Hermione were fighting over their pets and Ron called Crookshanks "a pig with hair" so Hermione retaliated by calling Scabbers a "smelly old shoe brush".

It's just a polite insult that is used to show disgust.

Question: Why did Hermione and Ron seem so surprised when they saw Harry? Or were they just embarrassed that he heard and saw them arguing?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Answer: I wouldn't say they were surprised, exactly. They hadn't seen Harry all summer and their reunion was a bit awkward because Ron and Hermione were squabbling with each other. They didn't expect to see Harry at that moment.

Question: Why did the trio watch Buckbeak being executed?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Answer: Because they had some small hope that something would happen that prevented it, they stayed to see if a miracle would happen basically. They didn't want to see it of course, but they felt it too terrible to just not know if there was any hope it wouldn't happen and then miss it.

lionhead

But how could they tell from the top of that hill? They were so far away they couldn't hear a thing.

They could see the executioner from where they were standing, just not very well or entirely. They saw him swinging the ax, but not what he was hitting. They just assumed it was Buckbeak.

raywest Premium member

Answer: They didn't actually see Buckbeak being executed because he never was. They were far enough away that they only partially saw the executioner wield the axe, but he was actually chopping a pumpkin out of frustration because Buckbeak had disappeared. If they had been closer, they most likely would not have looked at all, not wanting to witness such a gruesome scene.

raywest Premium member

Thank you but I was meaning to ask why they stayed on that hill to watch instead of returning to the common room?

It's pointless to speculate what their reasoning for watching was because it really comes down to it being a plot device. The audience has to think that Buckbeak has been killed in order to propel the story forward. That is achieved by having HR&H stop atop the hill and watch what they think is the execution. It also is to convey their sense of grief and hopelessness.

Question: Why did Ripper bite Vernon's leg? Did he think he was inflating Marge, or was Harry using his magic to control the dog into doing it?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Answer: Ripper is just a mean dog and badly raised by Marge (who is a dog breeder).

lionhead
1

Answer: That, and he was also instinctively protecting his awful mistress.

Plus some dogs are just nasty and bite for the sake of it.

Question: From the way Rosmerta said "Harry Potter?" I'm just wondering has she never heard of him?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Answer: She's heard of him, she is just surprised to hear his name when asking what Sirius Black is doing here.

Question: How come Hermione and Harry are confused when Dumbledore lies about not knowing they were rescuing Sirius? Hermione at least should know.

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Answer: I don't recall either Harry or Hermione acting confused and Dumbledore never lied to them about knowing they rescued Sirius. He would never directly acknowledge it to them, however, because he could more truthfully tell investigators that he knew nothing about Sirius' escape. It's called "plausible deniability." The less detail he knows about how they accomplished their goal, the less he can be questioned about it.

Question: When they are leaving the shrieking shack, why does Hermione keep looking back?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: She could have been looking at Remus and Pettigrew, who exited from the tunnel behind her, Ron, Harry, and Sirius. She probably also heard Snape making his way through the tunnel shortly after that. He was the last to exit from the Shrieking Shack after being knocked out by Harry's spell.

Question: When Hermione says "if we succeed more than one innocent life could be spared" why was she saying it in such a surprised tone?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: Because it was at that moment she understood what Dumbledore had meant when he said earlier that more than one life could be spared - meaning that both Buckbeak and Sirius Black could be saved.

Question: Even though Pettigrew valued his own life over his friends, why not just lie and tell him they went to Ireland to keep them safe?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: Wizards have access to veritaserum, the truth potion, and there are others who can use legilimacy to read minds. Any lies Pettigrew told would be exposed eventually.

Question: Just before Harry casts expelliarmus on Snape, why did Ron grab Hermione's sleeve?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: He was just pulling her out of the way to what he thought was a safer spot and out of the line of fire from Snape's wand.

Question: Can we even hear one word of what Ron and Hermione are saying when Sirius explains how it was noble for Harry to save Pettigrew?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: They can be overheard discussing Ron's injured leg. Hermione says she's sure that Madam Pomfrey will be able to fix it in no time. Ron's being overly dramatic, saying it might have to be chopped off.

Answer: No I mean after that.

Question: Why did Lupin resign?

DFirst1

Chosen answer: Because Snape had let it be generally known that Lupin was a werewolf. Previously only the Hogwarts faculty knew about this, and kept it secret. Snape still hated James Potter and Sirius Black for them mistreating him when they were all students at Hogwarts. Although Lupin never treated him badly, Snape still resented Remus for being friends with James and Sirius (Lupin was one of the four Marauders of the "Marauder's Map"). As Lupin told Harry, once the parents found out about his condition, they'd be contacting Dumbledore, protesting a werewolf teaching their children. It also fulfilled the curse that Voldemort had placed on the Defense Against the Dark Arts teaching position: no instructor lasts more than one year.

Question: Why did Hermione and Harry try to stop Ron from getting Scabbers back? They surely don't want their best friend's pet to go missing? They couldn't have been worried about getting caught since they were so far away?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: For one, students are forbidden to be outside the castle at night and, second, it was believed that Sirius Black was hunting Harry because he wanted to kill him, making it dangerous for Harry to be out. The dementor guards are also roaming the castle grounds, and Dumbledore had warned students that they cannot not distinguish friend from foe. They had already attempted to attack Harry twice. Also, if Harry, Ron, and Hermione were caught being outside, they would also get in trouble for having been at Hagrid's right before Buckbeak's execution. Students would not be allowed to be present at an event like that.

Question: What did Hermione mean by "thought I just saw...never mind"?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: In the pumpkin patch, Hermione turned and glimpsed the "other" Harry and Hermione hiding behind the trees. She either thought she'd imagined it or else she realised that it was her time-traveling self and could not let Harry and Ron know what was going on.

I couldn't see any part of either of them. What part of them was Hermione seeing?

Question: This goes for all the movies. All the times Emma Watson was supposed to be crying. How was she able to fake all those tears?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: Hermione did not cry that often during the series. When she did, it was minimal. Actors can become so immersed in the scene that they feel the emotions they are portraying and produce real tears. Actors also use eye drops to simulate crying.

Question: Why did Harry, Ron and Hermione stay behind the pumpkins and then run up the hill and watch Buckbeak's execution since it was just gonna upset Hermione?

THE GAMER NEXT DOOR

Chosen answer: They stayed behind the pumpkins until they were sure no one would see them. As for when they were running up the hill, they are kids and act on impulse when in a difficult situation. Most likely they were not thinking about what they would see or Hermione's reaction to it.

Question: During the Boggart scene when the boggart Snape transforms into a big spider if you look closely he goes from a witch, bat, mummy, lime lizard, small bug and then to the spider - why?

Cloude2 Premium member

Chosen answer: Ron fears all of those things. It took the boggart a moment to decide what Ron feared the most.

Deliberate mistake: When Harry drops the Monster Book of Monsters, in the first shot facing Harry's feet as the book chomps at him, he runs backwards a few steps and he stands at the foot of the bed. However, in the shot facing the fireplace, there is actually plenty of floorspace now, much more than other shots, between the rug and bed for Harry to continue to run backwards. (00:15:15)
