This movie was an overglorified showcase for 1986 Christmas toys. The plot was pretty weak and the new characters were hard to connect with. These new characters like Cup and Blurr were force fed down an 80's child throat like a 2nd can Coke II.
Killing off Prime during the height of his popularity was a mistake and that's one reason why no-one wanted to see this movie. Little Timmy probably cried his eyes out during the movie because Prime died and then he told his friends. This movie's only chance at success was word of mouth of an excited little boy which this movie didn't have going for it. They would have been better off repackaging the Optimus Prime character, and repackaging a new toy to go along with it.

Then again this movie is from an era where a billion dollar (Coke) company tried to replace it's flagship product. Why I remember my mom buying a 6-pack of Coke II and the last can sat in the fridge for 6 months. Like that can of Coke II, I lost interest in the Transformers shortly after this movie came out and I didn't ask for a Transformers toy for Christmas 1986.

Continuity mistake: During their fight at Autobot city, Megatron throws a rock at Optimus like a spear. Before he throws it it, looks big in his hands, but when it hits Optimus it looks quite smaller and fatter. Then Optimus pulls it out and it's back to the right size again.

More trivia for Transformers: The Movie

Question: Who are the inhabitants of the planet we see at the beginning (the first to fall victim to Unicron)? Are they transformers or just normal robots?

Answer: The planet was called Lithone. According to a comic book adaptation, the race that dwelled there were an offshoot of the Transformers who were more emotional. The limited information given on the only two characters named in the movie, Arblus and Kranix, shows that they can transform even though this is never shown.
