Ending / spoiler

When the Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms are fighting Godzilla in San Francisco, Ford detonates the entire MUTO egg sack, killing all the baby creatures. The MUTOs become enraged, and they continue ferociously attacking Godzilla. Eventually, it turns out, Godzilla is the good guy. He kills both the MUTO creatures and saves San Francisco from total destruction. Godzilla "dies" at the end of the film, but he later comes back to life and departs into the ocean. He is the savior of San Francisco, after all.
